A Live Painter, or Your Own Photos

Live wedding painting is one of the loveliest things a couple can book. A painter sets up an easel at the edge of the reception, and by the end of the night your guests have watched the first dance turn into a canvas. We don't do that, and nothing on this site can. This post puts what live painters publish about price and time next to what we publish, so you can choose the one that fits the wedding you are actually having.

What live painters charge

Three painters who publish their prices sit in the same band. The figures below are theirs, quoted from their own pages on the date in the sources.

Those prices buy a great deal: a trained painter's evening and travel, a physical canvas painted by hand, the studio hours to finish it, and the story of your guests watching it happen. Oneya asks a 25% retainer to hold the date and Torregrossa a $1,000 one. None of the three publishes a price for a digital file of the finished painting, and none publishes a refund policy on the pages we read.

What we charge, and what you get

Stately Vows works from photographs you already have. You upload one to three photos of the two of you, choose one of 32 styles across 7 collections, and the studio paints 4 versions of that style in a few minutes. Your first 4 passes are free, which is 16 watermarked previews before you spend anything. After that, 10 more passes for $10.

If one of them is the portrait, the digital pack is $44: all four versions of that style as PNG files, emailed to you when you pay. A giclée print starts at $85 for 8x12 inches, and a gallery canvas at $129. The Wedding Archive, $299, adds art of your vows, a star map of the wedding night, a map of your venue and an illustration of your bouquet, which the studio prepares after you order and emails as each one is finished.

What only a painter gives you

Let's be plain about the other side of that table. A live painting is an original: paint on canvas, made in the room on the day, and it exists once. Ours is a contemporary commissioned work, generated by AI and printed. It isn't hand-painted, we will never call it an oil painting, and nobody watches it being made. If what you want is the performance, a painter at the edge of the dance floor with your aunt looking over their shoulder, book the painter. We think that is money well spent.

We also can't paint what your photos don't show. A live painter works from what is in front of them: the light in that exact room, your grandmother mid-twirl, the flowers you argued about for a month. We work from your photos and a style, so a portrait of the two of you in a Regency ballroom is exactly that, a ballroom you were never in.

When your own photos are the better fit

• The wedding is soon, or it was years ago. A painter books months ahead and finishes months after. Your previews take minutes, and a portrait of a wedding that already happened is as easy as one of a wedding next month.
• You eloped, married at city hall, or never had the wedding you wanted. There was no reception for a painter to stand in. A portrait can still be the one you did not get to have.
• The budget belongs to the day itself. A painter costs as much as a photographer. The first previews here cost nothing, and the files cost less than a dinner out.
• You want to see it before you pay. Every painter above takes a retainer before a brush moves. Here you pay only for the portrait you have already chosen.
• You want a file. None of the painters we read sells one. Ours is the product, and you can print it again, share it, or set it as the lock screen your partner pretends not to notice.

Four questions to ask anyone you hire

Whoever paints you, ask the same four things. What exactly will we receive: a canvas, a file, or both? When will it be finished? What does the deposit buy if the date moves? And what happens if the result isn't right?

Our answers: you receive the files or the print you chose. Previews take minutes; prints are made to order and then shipped, and we do not promise a delivery date. There is no deposit. And every sale is final once you pay, because every portrait is made for you, but a print that arrives damaged, defective or misprinted, or never arrives, is replaced or refunded. The painters above publish no refund terms, so ask them directly; it is a fair question for anyone holding your retainer.

If a painter at your reception is the dream, we hope you book one, and we hope they are wonderful. If it is the two of you in a Gilded Age ballroom, the first 16 previews cost nothing, and you can live with them for a while before you decide.
